5 Ways to Make More Space In Your Warehouse

Here are five effective methods of maximizing the space within your existing warehouse:
1. Mezzanines
If your building has the ceiling height, adding a mezzanine is one of the best ways to gain usable square footage without changing your building’s footprint.
Because mezzanines are freestanding, modular structures that don’t rely on the building itself for support, they can be installed in a wide range of facilities. This allows you to place them nearly anywhere inside your facility, and it’s this flexibility that makes mezzanines so popular.
They can be installed to create additional storage, production areas, catwalks, breakrooms, offices and production areas and much more. Since mezzanines are custom-designed for your space, they can be adapted to just about any application.

2. Narrow & Very Narrow Aisles
If your goal is fitting more pallet positions into your existing footprint, converting your facility to a narrow or very narrow aisle layout could be an excellent choice.
In many cases, Narrow Aisle (NA) or Very Narrow Aisle (VNA) configurations, can typically increase storage density by 30% or more.
Making the switch does require specialized lift equipment (such as Bendi and Drexel forklifts), so there is a higher upfront investment. However, compared to leasing additional warehouse space or installing more specialized storage systems, it provides an excellent long-term return. You gain more storage while continuing to use lower cost selective pallet racking.
3. Drive-In Racking
Need even more space?
You may be able to eliminate aisles completely with a high-density solution such as drive-in racking. It maximizes storage density by allowing forklifts to drive directly into the rack structure to store and retrieve pallets. Instead of requiring an aisle between every row of racking, multiple pallets can be stored deep within the same lane.
This type of system works especially well for operations storing large quantities of the same product, where maximizing pallet positions is the priority.
4. Automated Storage & Retrieval Systems
Building on the space-saving ideas we’ve already covered, our next recommendation takes things in a new direction (literally).
Multi-Directional Pallet Shuttle systems eliminate the need for forklifts to enter the racking entirely. Instead, automated shuttles travel through storage channels, retrieve pallets, and bring them directly to the operator.
On top of creating a much denser storage layout, these systems also reduce forklift traffic and improve throughput. They can be configured for either FIFO or LIFO inventory strategies, making them a flexible option for a wide variety of operations.
While automation comes with a higher upfront investment, it also delivers benefits that go well beyond storage capacity, making it a strong long-term solution.
5. Vertical Lift Modules (VLMs)
If pallet storage isn’t your biggest challenge, but bins, totes, and shelving are taking over your warehouse, a Vertical Lift Module (VLM) could be exactly what you’re looking for.
Instead of spreading inventory across long rows of shelves, a VLM stores everything vertically and automatically delivers the correct tray to the operator whenever it’s needed. You’re making use of all that unused overhead space while your team spends less time walking back and forth looking for parts.
